Trenitalia Frecciarossa ETR1000: FR9612 Bologna Cle-Milano Cle on Linea Alta Velocità 6/11/22
This is an updated version of this video. I created it before I worked out how to avoid the terrible Youtube avc1 codec, which causes awful macroblocking in fast moving scenes. I no longer have the master files, but downloaded the smooshed version, colour graded, sharpened and upscaled it to 2k. This is now as good as it gets. Here is a trip on the high speed line (Linea Alta Velocità) from Bologna C.le to Milano C.le. Trains on this line flash through the Po valley at up to 300km/h. The AV line interconnects with the original line (linea lente- LL) to serve stations such as Modena and Piancenza. There is also a massive new station at Reggio Emilia AV Mediopadana. The most northerly part of the line from Milano Rogeredo to Melegnano isn't built to full HSL standard, and is at 3kV DC. It opened in 1997 to increase capacity in and out of Milano. The main part of the line was built to full HSL spec and 25kV AC, so trains using the line need to be bi-voltage. VMax for the 25kV section is 300km/h, though lower speeds are required for the curves around Modena. From Castelfranco, the line switches back to 3kV DC. Bologna C.le now has an underground HSL station- this leads into the HSL to Firenze. I was travelling on service Frecciarossa 9612 (Salerno to Torino PN)- one of Trenitalia's new generation Hitachi ETR1000s ran the service. These look great, but I find the ride quality is variable. In the recording, the most prominent noise is a weird metalic wheezing noise corresponding from vertical movements. I am not sure if this was comming from the coach interconnects or the suspension. Also, at times the ride got very gravelly- I think this was either due to tight, higher speed curves, or viaduct sections where the track was laid on concrete. It seems like Trenitalia doesn't quite have ride of these impressive trains pinned down yet! However, they are a great way to speed through the contryside- they eat up the distance like it was nothing.
