Diario de viaje - Uruguay, Colonia del Sacramento y Montevideo (17/10/2012)

Damián Alcázar takes us on a journey back in time through the enigmatic Colonia del Sacramento, located on the northern coast of the Río de la Plata, west of Montevideo, Uruguay. Aboard a 1938 Chevrolet Coupé, Damián travels with car restorer Claudio Cuello to tour the area's streets and the main avenue, General Flores. He also visits the Automobile Museum, an exhibition featuring cars such as a 1961 Ford Anglia, and chats with Jorge Sanguinetti, owner of a 1954 MG Midget TF. Damián takes us through the historic neighborhood, declared a World Heritage Site in 1995, starting with the Plaza de 1811, in front of the Puerta de la Ciudadela, and along the magical and unique Calle de los Suspiros (Street of Sighs). In this program, we'll listen to Candombe—a musical expression representative of Uruguayan culture—with Perico Carbajal and his group of candomberos. We'll go horseback riding with Mario Cabrera Trujillo to talk about gaucho culture, and with Pedro Bentancor to prepare mate, a traditional Uruguayan drink. Later, Damián visits Montevideo to taste the traditional barbecue at the Port Market, and also visits various sites in the city, such as Independence Square and La Rambla, where he chats with some fishermen. Finally, we'll meet with sommelier Adriana Bidegain, who will introduce us to the pleasures and flavors of Uruguayan wines.
