In the next ten years, a very high percentage of the workforce is expected to retire, and those positions need to be filled. This call for applications will not be the last. There will be others in 2027 and 2028, with a similar number of positions likely. What this means for those considering taking civil service exams is that the market is currently favorable, but waiting makes no sense. Past exam announcements show that between the publication of the announcement and the exam itself, there are usually between five and eight months. Anyone waiting for the announcement to be published before starting to prepare will have very little time. The three exams have different profiles. Administrative Assistant is the most basic entry: you only need a high school diploma (ESO), the exam lasts 90 minutes and has two parts: the first with 60 questions on the syllabus and aptitude tests (equal parts), and the second with 50 questions on office skills. State Administrative Officer requires a high school diploma (Bachillerato), the exam has 70 questions on the syllabus in the first part and a practical exercise in the second, and the syllabus is broader and more complex. GACE requires a university degree, has two separate exercises, and is the most advanced of the three. All three share much common syllabus material, meaning that preparing for one can be beneficial for the others. Regarding salary, the starting salary ranges from €18,000-€20,000 annually for Auxiliary positions to €28,000-€30,000 for GACE (General Administration and Career Support), with opportunities for advancement through three-year service increments and job changes. And something that must be very clear before starting: upon passing the exam, your posting is chosen based on your score from among the available positions nationwide. There is no guarantee of working in your place of residence, although there are positions throughout Spain. The five most common mistakes are: First, waiting until the official announcement is published to begin preparing; second, not properly analyzing which competitive exam best suits your profile before starting; third, for those preparing for Administrative or GACE positions, underestimating the practical case study and leaving it until the end when there is hardly any time left; and fourth, for those preparing for Auxiliary positions, not preparing for the psychometric tests with the seriousness they deserve, as they constitute half of the first part of the exam. And the fifth applies to all three: don't start with practice tests from the beginning.
