[Anchor] The Trump administration has announced measures to limit the stay of international students coming to the United States to four years. As a result, not only the 13,000 Korean students and their families currently residing in the U.S., but also Koreans preparing to study in the U.S. will be significantly affected. Correspondent Lee Seung-yoon reports from New York. [Reporter] As of 2024, the number of student visa holders in the U.S. increased by 11% from the previous year, surpassing 1.8 million. With the number of J visa holders (exchange visitor visas) and I visa holders (foreign journalist visas) reaching 500,000 and 37,000, respectively, the Trump administration has drawn its sword to reduce these numbers. [Donald Trump / U.S. President (May last year): I think we should set a cap of about 15% for international students at Harvard University, not 31%.] The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced final regulations limiting international students holding F visas and J visa holders to stay in the United States for a maximum of four years. Previously, holders of F or J visas could stay in the United States in virtually indefinitely through automatic extensions until they completed their studies, but now the duration of stay is being fixed. If a stay beyond four years is necessary, an extension process must be undertaken, but this will only be possible after undergoing a rigorous screening process. International students in the U.S. who have already received student visas will also be automatically subject to the 'four-year stay' rule, and the Department of Homeland Security plans to impose strict restrictions on changing majors. The new regulations are set to take effect around mid-September, 60 days after publication in the Federal Register; for student visa holders, this means the new rules will apply starting immediately with the new semester in September. The change in regulations is expected to cause significant confusion not only for international students in the U.S. but also for students from Korea and other regions planning or preparing to study in the U.S. As of last year, there were 10,861 Korean international students residing in the U.S. on F-1 student visas, and 1,347 family members staying with them on F-2 visas. There are 349 Korean I visa holders, including myself. The period of stay for foreign journalists coming to the U.S. on an I visa has also been shortened to 240 days, and thereafter, it must be extended in 240-day increments.
