Trying to catch a mosquito, I find myself clapping my hands alone in the empty air. All that remains after that crisp, sharp slap is the awkward warmth of my palm. Perhaps what I wanted to catch wasn't the mosquito, but the clumsy sounds of my emotions that linger around my ears every night, irritating me. Why do we always get so anxious about chasing away things that cling to us more vividly the more we try to avoid them? Even though I know it will itch immediately after being bitten, sometimes, even that itch feels like proof that I am alive, so I just let it be. By tomorrow morning, a red, swollen mark will remain.
