After Shiloh: Siege of Corinth 1, 1862: Sherman at Fallen Timbers, Mitchel at Huntsville | Maps

On April 8th, 1862, William Tecumseh Sherman has a skirmish just a few miles from the Shiloh Battlefield, where he throws back and wounds Nathan Bedford Forrest. Sherman also brings men up the Tennessee River to Bear Creek, where they knock out a bridge east of Corinth, Mississippi. Corinth is a critical railroad junction where Beauregard's Confederate army is retreating to following Shiloh. The Memphis & Charleston Railroad runs from Memphis, Tennessee to Corinth, then on to Huntsville, Alabama and Chattanooga, Tennessee. From there, the railroad goes southeast to Atlanta and on to Charleston, South Carolina. Mitchel leads a Union division south from Nashville and secures Huntsville, Alabama. In the far west, on the Mississippi River, General Pope secures Island No. 10. The Union western theater extends some 200 miles from Pope's position at New Madrid, Missouri to Grant and Buell's location at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, and finally to Mitchel at Huntsville, Alabama. The Union front is large, but united in securing both the Tennessee River and the railroad bridges that go over the river. Mitchel briefly secures Decatur, Alabama and Tuscumbia, Alabama, before rebel counterattacks bring him back to Huntsville. At Woodville, Alabama, Wisconsin infantry defend a bridge over Paint Rock River despite being outnumbered 10 to 1. At the end of the month, Mitchel secures Bridgeport, Alabama. Chattanooga, Tennessee is reinforced by rebel soldiers to prevent further Union advance along the rail line. Corinth is essentially cut off from supply and reinforcement when Beauregard arrives there. Henry Halleck has steamed from St. Louis to Pittsburg Landing, and he assumes command over Grant.
