#moviereaction #romancemovie #somethingnew Movie Details: Name: Something New (2006) Age Restriction: PG - 13 For Valentine’s Day, I reacted to one of my all-time favorite romance films, Something New starring Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker, and honestly, I love this movie just as much now as I did when I first watched it as a teenager. Rewatching it at 31 hits somewhat differently. When I was younger, I was drawn to Kenya’s career, her confidence, and of course the romance. But now, I connect more deeply to her internal struggle, the pressure to meet expectations, the need for control, and the long list of “conditions” we put on love and life. This film beautifully shows how sometimes we block our own blessings because we’re holding on too tightly to what we think things should look like. I really appreciated how the movie tackles identity, from navigating interracial dating to feeling like you have to “prove” your Blackness, to even the vulnerability around natural hair. So many of those moments felt personal and relatable to my own experiences growing up. What I love most is how Brian challenges Kenya in the best way. He disrupts her routine, pushes her out of her comfort zone, and reminds her that love isn’t about status, prestige, or checking boxes, t’s about connection, intimacy, and showing up. By the end, the movie reframes the beginning. Kenya thinks she knows what her dream looks like, but once she stops trying to control everything and gets out of her own way, she finds something even better. That message, letting go, letting flow, and being brave enough to choose what truly makes you happy, is why this film remains a favorite for me.
