Sciatica is a radiating pain in the buttock and leg caused by irritation or compression of the root of the body's largest nerve, the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve originates in the lower back and travels down the legs, causing sensation. There are many possible causes of sciatica. In this yoga class, we will use postures to prevent and relieve sciatica. These postures will help realign the lumbar spine, strengthen supporting muscles, and stretch the piriformis muscle (often the source of the pain).
