On May 10–11, 1996, Everest (Chomolungma, 8,848 m) experienced the most famous disaster in the history of the world's highest mountain. Several commercial expeditions, including the teams of seasoned guides Rob Hall and Scott Fischer, collided near the summit. Traffic jams along the route, missed time limits, and a sudden, brutal storm with hurricane-force winds turned a triumphant day into tragedy. Eight people died, including both leaders. Russian guide Anatoly Boukreev, in the midst of the storm, ventured out alone into the snowstorm and rescued three exhausted climbers. And client Beck Weathers, twice presumed dead, woke up in the snow and made his way back to camp.
