The pieces have been laid, brand new opportunities have been created from the mistakes of the opposition, the separation of powers has been destroyed, and now it's time for the final stop: the neutralization of the opposition and the elimination of alternatives at the ballot box. This time, my guest in the series is Professor Baskın Oran. Oran says that although things started well in many areas, the primary reason that led Erdoğan, whom he saw as the "sole" leader from the beginning, to take control and move towards autocracy was his understanding that the EU reform process would cost him dearly. As an external factor, he adds that the shift to the right in Europe due to massive immigration has paradoxically strengthened Erdoğan's hand. But, he says, as happened in the repressive environments after 1960, 1971, and 1981, at some point institutions and voters will say "wait a minute."
