A Shay on the Norfolk and Western - A True Story in HO Scale
The Norfolk and Western Railway was famous the world 'round for its fleet of modern coal burning steam locomotives which remained in mainline service longer than any other major railroad. What many do not know however, is that decades before the Y or the A, there was the Shay. Shay locomotives are most associated with logging railroads, but some worked coal branches. In 1907, the Norfolk and Western ordered a 4-truck Shay locomotive from the Lima Locomotive and Machine Company. In this video, we will go over the life and times of a Shay that was owned and operated by one of the last railroads a modern railfan would expect to have one. This video features an HO Scale Broadway Limited Imports Stealth 4-Truck shay with a LokSound 5 Decoder and customized sound set. It is running on the club layouts of The Northern Virginia Model Railroaders, the Bunker Hill Train Club, and the Shortline Model Railroad Club.
