Surrendering to the Potter’s Hand Pastor Sizwe Mtiyane Scripture: Jeremiah 18:1–9 There is no transformation without surrender. The prophet Jeremiah was instructed by God to go down to the potter’s house because it was there that God would reveal an important lesson about His people. The potter did not discard the clay when it became marred. Instead, he patiently reshaped it into another vessel as it seemed good to him. This is the heart of our God. He is the Potter and we are the clay. The first lesson we learn is humility. Humility is often doing what you need to do even when you do not want to do it. Many of us struggle, not because Satan is defeating us, but because pride keeps us from surrendering. Pride prevents us from receiving correction, wisdom and instruction. Everything that God intends to bless you with will come through another human being. God often uses people to answer our prayers, yet we sometimes reject the very people He has sent because they do not meet our expectations. God will not always teach us through people we approve of. Sometimes His greatest blessings are hidden in places we would never choose for ourselves. Do not miss God simply because the messenger does not look the way you expected. God gives instructions, but He counts on our obedience. The call of every believer is first to humble themselves and then to obey. Delayed obedience is still disobedience. Never miss what God has prepared for you because the postman stumbled on the way. The message remains God’s, regardless of the messenger. The beauty of clay is that while it remains soft, it can still be shaped. As long as the clay is willing to surrender, it can still be changed. In the same way, as long as we remain surrendered before God, He is able to transform our lives. Never put a full stop where God has only placed a comma. Many people spend their lives trying to convince others that they are fine, while God is inviting them into a process of healing and restoration. Our mistakes do not have to define us. When something does not work the first time, it does not mean you have failed. It means you have learned. Every disappointment presents another opportunity to grow, to become wiser and to try again. Failure is often God’s classroom, preparing us for greater things. There is always a day called today. Today you can choose differently. Today you can surrender again. Today you can return to the Potter’s house. God’s purposes for your life have not changed because His opinion of you has never changed. God remains faithful even when we have failed Him. Every one of us has sinned and fallen short of His glory, but God has never failed His people. His grace continues to call us back into His presence. The Potter determines the purpose of every vessel. A vessel does not choose its own assignment. It is made by the Potter and then placed into service according to His will. In God’s Kingdom, a surrendered vessel can even be broken so that it may be remade into something far more useful and beautiful than before. You can still change because the Potter is not finished with you. Surrender is far more than praying a prayer to receive Jesus. It is a daily decision to allow God to shape every area of our lives through obedience. True righteousness is revealed through a life that submits to God’s will. We carry the very presence of God within us. We are His vessels, entrusted with heavenly treasure. Because of who lives within us, there are places we cannot go, words we cannot speak and behaviours we cannot embrace. Our lives must reflect the One who has chosen to dwell within us. Return to the Potter today. Place yourself completely in His hands and allow Him to mould you into the vessel He created you to be.
