Le monastère troglodytique de Saint-Roman (abbaye de Saint -Roman - Beaucaire - Gard)

Vers le 12ème siècle, les moines agrandissent le monastère en construisant la chapelle abbatiale troglodytique de style roman. Au 14ème siècle le site est fortifié par des remparts. Les moines quittent Saint-Roman au 16ème siècle et le vende à un particulier qui édifie un petit château sur la terrasse. Le site reste abandonné puis en 1991 est classé monument historique. La commune de Beaucaire en étant propriétaire, les travaux de restauration peuvent se poursuivre. A voir : La chapelle abbatiale, les tombes rupestres, les cellules monastiques, le pressoir à vin, la grande salle, les fortifications. Around the 12th century, the monks enlarged the monastery by building the troglodyte abbey chapel in the Romanesque style. In the 14th century the site was fortified by ramparts. The monks left Saint-Roman in the 16th century and sold it to a private individual who built a small castle on the terrace. The site remains abandoned and then in 1991 is classified as a historical monument. The municipality of Beaucaire being the owner, the restoration work can continue.
