São Paulo’s Most Unique Art Collector Apartment | Avenida Paulista + Architect Interview
Apartment Paulista — Inside a São Paulo Art Collector’s Home | Architectural Film + Interview Located on Avenida Paulista, one of the most dynamic and culturally vibrant avenues in São Paulo, Apartamento Paulista is a 680 m² residence completed in 2024 by Studio Gaibola, led by architects Federico Concilio and Miguel Croce. Designed as a living gallery for an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art, the apartment brings together large-scale paintings, sculptural pieces, and everyday life within a carefully orchestrated architectural framework. In this film, we go beyond a visual tour, featuring an exclusive interview with the architect, who shares the thinking, challenges, and intentions behind the project. From the initial contradictions of the brief to the development of spatial strategies, the narrative reveals how architecture can simultaneously open space and create surfaces for art. At the core of the project lies a fundamental tension: the need for generous walls to display artworks, while dissolving the traditional compartmentalization of the apartment. The solution emerges through a series of subtle architectural gestures, angled walls, shifts in ceiling height, and spatial sequences that divide without enclosing. A distinctive geometric language, based on diamond and triangular forms, runs throughout the project, from architectural elements to custom-designed details. What begins as a response to a structural condition evolves into a cohesive identity, expressed across scales, materials, and furniture. Set within the dense urban fabric of São Paulo, the apartment opens itself toward light and depth, establishing visual connections from the entrance all the way to the terrace — transforming circulation into a guided, almost cinematic experience. Material choices further reinforce the atmosphere. Brazilian stones and carefully curated finishes create a warm and expressive environment, while each space is designed as a unique moment within a continuous narrative. This film unfolds as a poetic and cinematic journey, combining moving images with the architect’s voice, offering not only a visual exploration of the project, but also a deeper understanding of the ideas that shaped it.
