He forged every weapon under heaven, yet none could win him that war. The moment the shackles slipped from his wrists, a whole mountain of maples turned red. [The Story] In the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing), Chiyou "raised arms against the Yellow Emperor" and fought on the wilds of Jizhou. The Emperor sent the responding dragon Yinglong to gather a flood into a towering wall of water; Chiyou summoned the Wind Earl and the Rain Master and loosed a raging storm against it, and heaven and earth turned over. Then the Emperor sent down the drought goddess Nüba — the rain stopped, the clouds scattered, and Chiyou was at last captured and slain. The black-iron shackles he cast off fell to the earth and became a maple wood — later generations said those blood-red leaves were the bloodstains he could never wash away. This MV begins at the forge-fires of Mount Gelu: eighty-one bronze-headed, iron-browed brothers and the lone defiance of one who would not bow; the deadly fog-battle on the wilds of Jizhou; the dragon's world-drowning flood; the storm of the Wind Earl and Rain Master; and the deathly pale heaven-light that severed it all when Nüba descended — until his final moment, captured and standing unbowed before execution: the shackles slip free, a crimson light wells up from the ground, maple saplings burst from the soil, and at the song's loudest peak a mountain of blood-red maples floods across heaven and earth. Chiyou died, yet every red leaf remembers the way he refused to kneel. (The immortal narrator Luo Qinghan, standing between the ink-wash void and the blood-maple wood, is the only witness to this lost battle.) [Behind the Music | Why "Ethereal Guofeng Rap"] All the ferocity goes to the instruments; all the ethereal grace goes to the voice — that is this piece's central contrast. A dense drill groove, ancient war-drums and rolling military snares press in like ten thousand troops at the gate, and the suona tears out the sharpest blade at the peak; while Luo Qinghan's voice stays gossamer-thin throughout, the faintest breath-tone, never rising or bursting even in the chorus, fragile to the point of nearly breaking — a voice soft to the extreme, telling a war brutal to the extreme. Beneath it, a wordless bass Mongolian throat-singing drone lies thick and heavy, like a low hum from the depths of the earth. I will share my robe with you... your foe is mine" (the eighty-one brothers, one in their hatred of the foe); Qu Yuan's Nine Songs · Guo Shang — "Though the body died, the spirit lives on; your soul shall be a hero among the dead" (the defiance of the defeated); Shan Hai Jing · Great Wilds South — "the shackles Chiyou cast off became the maple wood" (the source of the blood maple); Yang Shen's Lin Jiang Xian — "the great river rolls east, its waves washing away all heroes; right and wrong, triumph and defeat all vanish at a turn of the head" (a gaze back across the millennia).
