He drinks the Yellow River dry, drinks the Wei River dry, and races on toward the great marsh of the north — only to collapse from exhaustion on the way. As he dies, he drives the peach-wood staff that has been with him all his life straight into the scorched earth. Where the staff falls, the cracked ground splits open and a peach forest three hundred li wide springs up, with clear springs welling beneath it — and the people he died to save drink, and live.
