PAUL MCCARTNEY Tour: The Paul McCartney World Tour // Leg 1: Europe (Show 22 / 102) Venue: Live at the Palacio de los Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid City: Madrid, Spain Date: November 2nd, 1989 ¡Bienvenidos sean, mis queridos suscriptores! Next up on the tour, we continue with Paul’s first solo appearance in Spain, these two shows are his first performances in the country since The Beatles toured the country in 1965. We also get a press conference where Paul speaks about the tour, his previous visit to the country, and other interesting stuff (such as Paul apologizing for not coming to the country in a long time). Full footage exists from this press conference, but I wasn’t able to find it. The audience recording used for this merge is source 1, which is in good quality, but it's a bit distant, has speed issues and the not-so-great acoustics of the venue shine here. Here’s some Paul commentary about this particular stop of the tour from the 1993 New World Tour booklet: “I’ve always liked Latin countries and Spain is special because it’s the land of the guitar. I like the language too, I did it at school from the age of 11 which was a bit unusual then. As a kid I had this mate whose dad was the harbormaster on the Herculaneum dock - I always loved that name - in Liverpool and he asked me to go and stay the night. It was one of the first stay-overs I had. “I remember the following morning, the boiled egg, after a good kip, it was exciting, I loved it. We went along the docks and had a good play on this massive mound of tyres. Then we came to this Spanish boat and we’d both done about a year of Spanish by then so it was, Buenos dias, senor, and they said, Si, blablabla, and we were. Non rápidamente, por favor. But we managed a bit of a chat." As we get closer to the end of the first leg of Paul’s first solo world tour, it’s evident Paul hasn’t gotten much better over the span of a month (and a bit more), and he’s quite poor early on, with “Figure of Eight'' being probably one of the roughest so far, thankfully the great energy of the Spanish crowd allows him to recover slightly as the show goes on, with some pretty interesting vocal performances tonight. The band’s in great shape, with several moments of brilliance and tightness that rivals the most famous nights of the tour. The audience is having a ball, and the atmosphere at this gig is once again, awesome. “Things We Said Today” from tonight’s show got used in Tripping The Live Fantastic, but the solo guitar parts on the official record were overdubbed from somewhere else, so I’ve switched to the AUD for those bits.
