Jaguar XK8 Automatic Transmission Removal: Following Factory Procedure 44.20.01 AT07 X100 modurol
Welcome to Video AT07 in our automatic-to-manual Jaguar X100 project series. In this episode, we walk through the comprehensive, step-by-step physical removal of the factory ZF 5HP24 automatic transmission from our 1996 Jaguar XK8. We base our teardown directly on the official Jaguar Service Manual procedure (Section 44.20.01), adapting the workflow slightly to accommodate standard garage workshop access. We cover everything from setting up the front engine support cross-brace (using M14 x 1.5 pitch bolts) and safely isolating the battery with the doors open, to unbolting the torque converter from the drive plate via the crank pulley harmonic balancer (24 mm socket). From underneath the vehicle, we detail the removal of the gear selector cable, the multi-plug harness connector, the side-mounted rotary switch, the 19 mm oil cooler lines, and the T50/T40 rear transmission mount bracket. Finally, we break the bellhousing loose from the stubborn alignment dowels located at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions before safely lowering the unit on our custom-modified transmission jack. If you would like a digital copy of this official factory service checklist, we host this procedure along with brochures, wiring schematics, and extensive technical archives completely free on our website: http://www.modurol.co.uk Whether you are performing maintenance on your automatic setup or preparing your own chassis for a manual gearbox swap, please check out and subscribe to our alternate channels, Modurol Live and Modurol Shorts, so we can keep working and learning together across the community. regards Damian 0:00 - Introduction to Jaguar Service Procedure 44.20.01 0:40 - Required Specialty Tools & Engine Support Placement 1:30 - Battery Isolation & Window Drop Safety Precautions 2:29 - Fabricating Engine Lifting Straps (M14 x 1.5 Thread) 3:46 - Setting Up the Engine Cross-Brace & Protecting Components 5:26 - Draining the ZF 5HP24 Transmission Fluid (8 mm Hex) 6:49 - Disconnecting the Gear Selector Cable (10 mm & 8 mm Spanners) 8:34 - Removing the Transmission Harness Multi-Plug & Rotary Switch 9:15 - Removing the Rotary Switch. 11:21 - Unclamping the 19 mm Transmission Oil Cooler Lines 13.23 - Accessing & Unbolting the Torque Converter (15 mm Socket) 15:21 - Clearing the Engine Harness Mounting Bracket From Above 16:52 - Loosening the Bellhousing Structural Flange Bolts 20:15 - Mounting the Transmission Jack & Chaining the Casing 21:15 - Removing the T50 / T40 Rear Transmission Mount 21:48 - Unbolting & Sliding the Drive Propeller Shaft (19 mm) 24:33 - Separating the Bellhousing From the Casing Alignment Dowels 26:13 - Lowering the 5HP24 Automatic Gearbox Safely 29:15 - Technical Documentation Access & Next Steps: ZF S653 Manual Swap You can also find us on:- YouTube - / @modurol Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/share/1DKkER...
