VALEA ALBĂ 1476: BĂTĂLIA PIERDUTĂ CARE A SALVAT MOLDOVA
Just 18 months after the crushing victory at Vaslui, where over 100,000 Ottomans perished in the swamps, Moldavia was once again facing mortal danger. In July 1476, on the plateau above Pârâului Alb, Stephen the Great looked down into the valley with only 12,000 men. Beyond, the huge army of Sultan Mehmed II—the conqueror of Constantinople who had come in person to put an end to Moldavian resistance—was advancing. Abandoned by the great Christian powers of Europe, who sent him only polite letters and beautiful titles like “Athleta Christi,” Stephen was forced to face an overwhelming force. Struck from the east by the Tatars and betrayed from the southwest by the mountaineers, Moldavia was transformed into a deserted land, with poisoned wells and burned fields to starve the invading army. In this video, we analyze step by step the development of one of the most dramatic confrontations in our history: • Diplomatic Betrayal: How Stephen the Great was left alone in the face of the alliance between the Ottomans, Tatars and Mountainous people. • Survival Tactics: Why the Grand Army was thinned and how the ruler chose the location of the Battle of Războieni. • Clash of the Titans: The critical moment when Mehmed II himself took up his shield and led the Janissaries in an attack across the stream ford. • Disaster and Miracle: How an army defeated on the battlefield managed to win the campaign, forcing the Sultan to retreat without conquering a single fortress. A story about courage, sacrifice and the land that "bleached with the bodies of the perished". The bones of those brave men still lie today under the foundation of the church in Războieni, a carved stone building that, unlike the shining Voroneț, is silent and remembers.
