In the severed tail section, Staff Sergeant Eugene Moran was still alive—wounded, trapped, and falling from the sky with no usable parachute. His survival was almost impossible. But for B-17 tail gunners, danger was built into the job. They sat alone at the very rear of the bomber, cut off from the cockpit, exposed to freezing altitude, flak bursts, cannon fire, and direct fighter attacks. German pilots knew the tail was one of the key defensive positions, and tail gunners often saw enemy fighters before anyone else did.
