Inside the Making of Chuwak, Tripura's Fermented Alcohol

In homes across Tripura, generations continue to brew chuwak through inherited traditions of rice fermentation. Popular among the Kaloi, Jamatia and Debbarma communities, the fermented rice beverage is prepared and served in small earthen pitchers known as langi. Beyond its role as a social drink, chuwak remains closely tied to ideas of hospitality, health and community life. This practice was documented as part of The Great Himalayan Exploration – Edition 2.
