¿Cuál fue el origen de la SEPTUAGINTA y por qué es tan importante? | BITE
A letter from a man named Aristeas tells us about the possible origin of the Septuagint. Aristeas wrote to his brother Philocrates and told him what happened at the court of Ptolemy II. According to the letter, the king asked Demetrius, his librarian, to arrange for the Jewish Law to be translated and added to the royal collection of books. So a letter was sent to Eleazar, the Jewish high priest of Jerusalem, asking for help in translating the Law. Aristeas himself was one of two men chosen to carry the request to the Jewish capital. Seventy-two elders, six from each of the twelve tribes, were chosen as translators and sent to Egypt, taking with them a beautiful copy of the Law. Upon arriving in Alexandria, the king held a seven-day banquet for them. After this, the monarch provided them with lodgings near the sea, probably on the island of Pharos. Under the shadow of the Alexandrian lighthouse, the translators completed their work. Although it has been suggested that this story may be a metaphor, the Letter of Aristeas preserves at least a grain of truth about how the Septuagint began. Aristeas describes the origin of the Septuagint with the translation of the Pentateuch. This was done in Alexandria, where there was a large Jewish population. Hebrew ceased to be a spoken language already in the exilic or post-exilic period, and Aramaic became the common language of the Jews. With the rise of Alexander the Great, the Jews of the Diaspora were Hellenized, and for some, Greek had become their primary language. Therefore, it became necessary to translate the Scriptures into Greek. Possibly, the Pentateuch was translated around the middle of the third century BC, and the rest of the Old Testament was translated in the second century BC.
