The US Government GAVE UP on This Fish in 2000 — It Just Proved Everyone WRONG, 60 Years Early
In 2000, the U.S. government declared the West Coast groundfish fishery a federal disaster and effectively gave up on yelloweye rockfish. Ten species had been fished below a quarter of healthy levels, and NOAA's own scientists set this one's recovery date at 2084 — eighty-four years away, on biology that lives past a century and barely reproduces before adulthood. In October 2025, officials announced something almost nobody expected this soon. Yelloweye rockfish was declared fully rebuilt — the last of the original ten collapsed species to hit that mark, roughly sixty years ahead of schedule. Two decades of hard quotas, area closures, and bycatch reforms finally showed up in the data. But this isn't a simple comeback story. Puget Sound yelloweye are still listed as threatened, discard mortality from recreational fishing remains a serious problem, and the coastal communities that sat through twenty-five years of restrictions are still waiting to see what a rebuilt stock actually means for their livelihoods. This is the full story — what collapsed the fishery, who paid the price during the shutdown, what actually turned it around, and what's still fragile about a recovery nobody thought they'd live to see.
