Can human urine be used as fertilizer in the garden? Is it a natural fertilizer, an internet myth, or a practice that can make sense if done correctly? In this video from La Horteta de Bussy, we talk frankly about the use of urine in agriculture and in the garden: what's true, what's a myth, what nutrients it can provide, what risks it may have, and how we shouldn't use it. Urine is mainly composed of water, but it also contains elements that can be beneficial for plants, especially nitrogen in the form of urea, which is then transformed by the microbial activity in the soil. But be careful: that doesn't mean we can use it indiscriminately. In the video, we'll see: What urine actually contains. Why it can provide nitrogen to the soil. Its relationship to urea. Why it's not advisable to use it undiluted directly on plants. How to dilute it if someone wants to try it. Why it can increase soil salinity. What risks are there if we're taking medication or are sick? Why it should never be applied to the leaves or the part we're going to eat. How it can be used in compost to add nitrogen and aid decomposition. What precautions should be taken if we have organic certification? Why it's not a miracle fertilizer. My opinion is clear: Can it be used? Yes, but sensibly. Indiscriminately? No. Pure and directly on plants? Best not to. In compost? It can be an interesting option if used occasionally and in moderation. Urine can be a natural, cheap, and readily available resource, but that doesn't mean it's perfect or that it replaces a well-planned fertilizer program.
