On November 5, 1985, Zbigniew Religa – then still an associate professor – and the team he led, including his deputies Marian Zembala and Andrzej Bochenek, performed the first successful heart transplant in Poland. Today, their work is continued by their sons: Grzegorz Religa and Prof. Michał Zembala, also cardiac surgeons. How do they remember those days? Who were their fathers to them – as parents and as doctors? Do they compare to them? And what is it like to live in the shadow of legends – especially when you share the same profession?
