Patrick shares two Boulder examples that prove it: a high-end home whose expensive roof failed in about nine years due to poor flashing, ventilation, and installation, and a neighborhood of economy shingles that lasted 31 years because they were installed right. Here is the reality check. The average asphalt shingle roof in Colorado lasts around 11 years, driven mainly by hail, wind, poor installation, and improper ventilation. Ventilation is the most underestimated factor: improper attic ventilation traps heat and moisture, bakes the shingles from underneath, and degrades the sheathing. It matters so much that manufacturers like GAF require proper attic ventilation as a condition of the warranty, meaning poor ventilation can void your warranty regardless of shingle quality. Add Colorado's UV intensity at altitude, freeze-thaw cycling, and hail exposure, and you can see why roofs here wear faster.
