Struthof : le devoir de mémoire et d'histoire enfin respecté

November 2, 2005 The only concentration camp in France, Struthof was built in 1941 in Alsace, then under Nazi Germany's control. In four years, 44,599 deportees were registered. Gilbert May arrived in August 1944. He tells his story. Struthof's specialty was medical experiments on prisoners, resistance fighters, and political deportees known as "nights and fogs." More than 20,000 died at Struthof. In this corner of Alsace, even today, people remember this dark period. A European Center for Resistance Deportees has just been built, between shadow and light. Memories resurface around the former camp. As a little girl, Yvonne Hisler saw the columns of deportees. She bears witness. Previously, the Struhof camp was not included in the lists of Nazi concentration camps. Today, the duty of memory and history is finally being respected.
