Exploring New Ways to Craft Mug Footwells
This week's video is another conclusion to a film posted a few months ago. In it, I discuss and demonstrate different ways of trimming the bases of mugs in order to find something new, be it a more decorative finish or something slightly more sculptural to discover on the underside of a cup. I'll take you through the entire process, from throwing them with a slightly thicker base, to trimming them, waxing them, glazing the pots and tidying up the tong marks, to finally reduction firing the vessels in my gas kiln and then assessing what emerges after being fired to cone ten, (1290ºC).
