Experimenting with New Bowl Shapes (Throwing & Trimming)
This week, I'm have some well earned 'playtime' at the wheel. That means throwing a variety of one-off bowl forms and trimming some crisp, tall-footed vessels, simply for my own enjoyment. I've spent so much time over the past year focusing on new bowl forms that have more intricate external shapes, yet I think there's still some room for experimentation when it comes to the internal forms. I've always liked throwing steps and ridges on the outer portion of the pots I make but I reckon there's space to do that on the inside too, even if it detracts from the objects functionality, these bowls, and many I make, are way beyond that. Thus, in this weekend's long video I'm throwing and trimming a batch of six stoneware bowls, each made from 2 lb of clay, (around 907 grams), and thrown on a wonderful Russian doll batt system produced by Hartley & Noble, you can find a link to their fantastic batt systems here: https://hartleyandnoble.co.uk I hope you found the video useful and thanks for watching. It's a bit of a rambling video, sometimes I just feel the need to speak my mind and avoid the minutiae of what's actually happening on the wheel. 🏺 • You may also be interested in my 'A Beginner's Guide' series, which you can find here:    • How to Throw a Pot — A Beginner's Guide  📖 • ORDER MY BOOK: https://geni.us/bymyhands Timecodes: 0:00 - Introduction 0:28 - Discussing the batt system used 1:17 - Weighing out and wedging clay, (2 lb/900 grams) 2:26 - Throwing the bowls 4:28 - The importance of support clay 12:01- What happens if there's insufficient support clay 17:37 - Separating the bowls from the batts 19:10 - Drying the bowls slowly... 20:18.- Trimming the bowls once leather hard 21:29 - Why I trim pots upright 23:26 - Discussing about why tools chatter & how to fix it 26:48 - The importance of connecting your hands 28:43 - The HPL batts I use 29:45 - Why I chamfer my bases foot-ring 31:50 - Throwing/trimming feet like this 35:54 - Chatting about craft vs. social media 37:35 - The six different shapes 38:37 - Clean up • Find out much more via the link below! https://linktr.ee/floriangadsby • Get in touch here: https://www.floriangadsby.com/contact Sign up to my newsletter here: https://www.floriangadsby.com/newsletter
