Making Of Massive Sculptural Wooden Desk

Hyphae Desk - Hand-made sculptural desk constructed from solid Ash. This piece is inspired by mycelium in forest soil and explores ideas of symbiosis and interconnection. Made from solid Ash, the body was built with stack lamination and carved extensively by hand and power tools. The free-form bent laminations were made using a vacuum pump and bag, allowing the curves to be drawn gesturally in space, pushing the Ash to its limit of flexibility. The surfaces were refined into smooth valleys and crisp edges that highlight the Ash wood grain. Huge thanks to John Donald for commissioning this work and for his continued support in my practice.
