16th Sun Ordinary Time: "Toccata" by T. Dubois/music of Bach, Walther, & Mendelssohn
Postlude: “Toccata in G Major” Theodore Dubois (1837-1924) Preludes: 2 settings of LOBE DEN HERREN “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” Straslund Gesangbuch (1665) setting 1: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) ***note that the melody is played in the pedal but is ornamented and hard to detect. The only spot where you may hear and recognize the melody of "Praise to the Lord" is on the last phrase ("praise him in glad adoration"). setting 2: Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748)***the melody again is played in the pedals but in this setting is recognizable. Walther was Bach's cousin. “Con moto moderato” from Symphony No. 4 Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)***the choice of playing Mendelssohn along with Bach and company was purposeful. Mendelssohn was instrumental in bringing awareness to Bach's music after it been dormant for decades due to the fact that it went out of fashion during the classical period
