It develops when cells divide uncontrollably and invade surrounding tissue. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide and affects both smokers and non-smokers. Key risk factors include active smoking, passive smoking, occupational exposure to pollutants (e.g., asbestos, silica), and genetic alterations, such as those affecting the EGFR, KRAS, or ALK genes. Hormones and lifestyle—particularly diet and physical activity—can also modulate the risk. The disease progresses very differently: some tumors grow slowly and remain localized, while others spread rapidly and metastasize. Diagnosis is made via imaging (X-ray, CT scan) and confirmed by a tissue sample. Early detection significantly improves treatment options and survival rates.
