It usually develops after a common cold. Viruses cause the nasal mucous membrane to swell. The passages connecting to the sinuses narrow, mucus drains less effectively and accumulates. This makes it easier for bacteria to thrive. Typical symptoms include pressure or pain in the forehead, cheeks, around the eyes, or upper jaw, a blocked or runny nose, a reduced sense of smell, and headaches that worsen when bending over. Those affected often feel fatigued and have a slight fever. A distinction is made between acute sinusitis (sudden onset, often following an infection, frequently resolving within two weeks) and a chronic form with longer-lasting, recurring symptoms.
