An endless vastness, arctic temperatures. East of Japan and 5,000 kilometers north of Vladivostok lies Yakutia, Russia's coldest republic. Yakutsk is the capital of the Republic of Yakutia and is located approximately 5,100 kilometers east of Moscow. In the middle of all this: Oimyakon. With its 500 inhabitants, the coldest inhabited place on Earth. This village is located in a mountain valley on the upper banks of the Indigirka River. One of the main reasons for the freezing temperatures is the great distance from the Atlantic Ocean and the moisture it provides to a large part of the Northern Hemisphere. Masses of mountains protect Siberia from the warm air of the west and south, while in the opposite direction, the gateway to the Arctic is wide open. Therefore, in winter, masses of cold air spread across the Siberian landscape unchecked. The average winter temperature is -40 degrees Celsius. Children in Oymyakon, Siberia, have the coldest route to school in the world. Extreme living conditions are completely normal for the inhabitants of Oymyakon. This is also true for the Tariks family and their son, Aljosha. He is 8 years old. Children his age are only excused from school due to the cold when temperatures drop below -54 degrees Celsius. Even before leaving for school, Aljosha feels the grim chill. Without running water, the house also lacks a toilet. So Aljosha has to go outside to the unheated outdoor toilet in the garden. Sasha's mother prepares tea. To do this, he has to go outside the house, which is made of wood, like all the houses in Oymyakon. Because of the extreme temperature differences here, concrete walls would quickly crack and crumble. In the short summers, it can get quite hot in Oymyakon. Blocks of ice are stored in front of the wooden house. The farmer next door cut them from the frozen river. There is no running water in this region, where temperatures drop to -65 degrees Celsius; no pipes stand a chance. Aljosha's mother puts the ice in the pot and makes some tea for her son. Like every day, Aljosha has to get ready for school. Like most of the other students, Sascha mostly wears his traditional clothing. The clothes are layered like an onion to protect the students from the Arctic temperatures. His mother, Irina, has heated the living room to 20 degrees Celsius. So when Aljosha opens the front door, it's 70 degrees colder; such is daily life in Oymyakon. As soon as the children open the double doors of the dormitory, the icy cold brutally engulfs them. In less than a second, their nostrils freeze. Unlike students in other parts of the world, the children of Oymyakon rarely play, but are instead intensely focused on their walk to school. With brisk steps, they travel in groups, trying to cover the 2-kilometer route as quickly as possible. There is no sign of snowball fights. They don't spend a second watching the cows, which are kept in their barns for up to nine months of the year and are now casually being led out of the barn for a drink. Although the cows wear some kind of special "braces" that protect their udders from freezing. Once at the school building, Aljosha and the other students remove many of their layers of clothing and begin their lessons.
