But a walk through the town is a harsh dose of reality that completely changes initial plans. The sight of several of its streets and many of its houses is hardly the best introduction for tourists. Some houses are missing their roofs, others their doors, and behind these gaps peek out old appliances and furniture, rubble, construction debris, buckets, sticks, bricks, cables, cans... This place, which for years was picture-postcard scenery, is no longer so. The National Institute of Statistics says that eight people are registered as residents of the town, but only six sleep there every night, five of them over 60 years old. That's now, in the summer. In October or November, when the temperatures drop, Margarita and her husband will go to Ciudad Rodrigo to spend the winter and won't return until February. At this time of year, however, the town gains some residents, thanks to those whose roots are here, who left one day and return every summer. "I've already complained about how bad the town is online, in Facebook forums for people from Las Hurdes who live elsewhere, but there are even those who don't like it when you point out what is an obvious reality," explains one of these residents.
