The inspiration: In 1909, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was attending a Mother's Day sermon. As she listened, she thought that fathers also deserved recognition. The tribute: Sonora had been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who was widowed and raised his six children alone on a farm. For her, her father was an example of courage, love, and sacrifice. The first celebration: Sonora initially proposed June 5 (her father's birthday) for the holiday. Although preparations weren't completed in time, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the law officially declaring the third Sunday in June as Father's Day, and it was adopted by the vast majority of countries in Latin America (including Peru) and Europe.
