In March 2021, Pearl, a popular Asian elephant at Sapporo's Maruyama Zoo, began living with her partner Shushu for breeding purposes. She was later found to be pregnant, sparking excitement among Sapporo residents over Hokkaido's first elephant birth! This marks the first time an elephant has given birth in Japan using "semi-indirect husbandry," a method of rearing never before seen in Japan, where zookeepers do not enter the cage. As the birth drew near in August 2023, eight zookeepers were with the baby around the clock to prepare for the occasion. The moment the baby elephant was born on August 19th.
