The Postman’s Path: A Community's Fight for Survival | Isle of Harris

Hidden deep in the hills of the Isle of Harris lies Rhenigidale — once the most isolated village in Scotland. Until 1990, there was no road here. The only way in or out was a rough, winding track across the mountains — the Postman’s Path. In this video, my father and I walk that historic route, retracing the footsteps of the postmen who carried mail — and hope — to a community that refused to die. For decades, the people of Rhenigidale fought for survival. They didn’t want to become the second St Kilda — abandoned and forgotten. Their struggle to stay, and the eventual building of the road, remains one of the most remarkable stories in the Outer Hebrides. Join us on this journey through wild Harris landscapes, village history, and the incredible spirit of those who called this remote place home. 🎥 Featuring: The full walk along the Postman’s Path The story of Rhenigidale’s fight for a road A look inside the Rhenigidale Hostel Reflections on community, resilience, and the edge of Scotland 📍 Location: Rhenigidale, Isle of Harris, Outer Hebrides, Scotland #Scotland #IsleOfHarris #OuterHebrides #Rhenigidale #ScottishIslands #ScottishHistory #HikingScotland #PostmansPath
