How to Fix a Soft Sumo Deadlift Lockout
Completion of the deadlift movement is classed as a full extension or lockout of both the hips and knees. A common issue often experienced in the sumo deadlift is a soft lockout. This problem will prevent a lifter from technically completing the lift and will often have to resort to illegal means (in competition) such as hitching to complete the movement. One of the common reasons why a lifter may come across a soft lockout is due to their starting position. When excessive extension or over tucking of the pelvis occurs in the starting position, this will reduce the moment arm or distance the hips are able to travel in the deadlift. Thus, an over tucked pelvis will often lead to lockout issues. In order to perform an action, a displacement has to be first created through a reverse action. Therefore, we can combat the soft lockout in the sumo deadlift by placing greater emphasis on our hinge to create hip space for the lockout to occur.
