The massive toll of extreme weather on Europe | Antoni Bielewicz

Rail disruptions, damaged infrastructure and warnings of severe weather events are just some of the consequences of the heatwave sweeping across Europe. Poland and Germany have recorded record-high temperatures. “We can expect more and more heatwaves like this,” Antoni Bielewicz, Executive Director for the EU & Governance and Central & Eastern Europe Programs at the European Climate Foundation, said on World Talks. They also come at a significant cost, particularly because many cities are not prepared to cope with such extreme temperatures. Labor markets are affected as well, with productivity levels declining. According to the expert, one of Europe’s main challenges in the coming years will be growing water shortages. Both ordinary citizens and the agricultural sector are expected to feel the impact. Join Sascha Fahrbach and his guest as they discuss possible future scenarios and the challenges associated with rising temperatures.
