The Evil Design of Vietnam Gun Trucks
Gun trucks are one of the strangest and most overlooked stories of the Vietnam War, fighting vehicles built by the drivers themselves that were never an official branch of the Army. The video covers the supply problem of 1967, hundreds of forward bases fed entirely by truck convoys running over 100 miles of isolated roads like Route QL19. It gets into the ambush of September 2nd, 1967, a deliberate North Vietnamese test run that proved the soft skinned convoys were the weak point of the whole American war effort. The video covers the fix that came from the 20 year old drivers, first sandbags that failed in the rain, then steel plate cut from wrecked vehicles and tactically borrowed from other bases, welded into armored gun boxes on M35 and later M54 trucks. It gets into the wildest builds, an armored personnel carrier hull mounted on a cargo bed and the truck Pure Hell with a hand cranked minigun. The video covers the firepower race, multiple M60s, twin 50 caliber Brownings, the quad 50 turret putting out 2,000 rounds a minute, and the unauthorized World War 2 weapons the crews trusted, Thompsons, BARs and grease guns. It gets into convoy tactics, one gun truck for every five cargo trucks and the bumping system that kept no part of a column unprotected. The video covers the battle at An Khe Pass in February 1971, where the gun truck Brutus held its ground among burning fuel tankers and Specialist Larry Dahl earned the Medal of Honor saving his crew. It ends with the one surviving truck, Eve of Destruction, on display at the US Army Transportation Museum. The channel makes military history documentaries about wars, weapons, and the machines and people behind them.
