On Friday, May 1, Rubén Rocha Moya, a member of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), announced in a message that he had requested a temporary leave of absence as governor of Sinaloa after the Attorney General's Office (FGR) launched an investigation following a complaint filed by the United States Department of Justice against the 76-year-old politician for alleged ties to a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. The accusation by the Donald Trump administration includes nine other people, among them Juan de Dios Gámez Mendívil, who also requested a leave of absence as mayor of Culiacán, and Senator Enrique Inzunza Cazárez, who has stated in media interviews that he will not request a leave of absence and that he will "refute" the complaint against him from his position. On Saturday, May 2, the Sinaloa Congress appointed Yeraldine Bonilla Valverde, who was serving as Secretary General of the Government, as interim governor. She is the first woman to become head of the state's executive branch. This Monday, May 4th, at the morning press conference, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated, “Let the people of Sinaloa know that we are maintaining all federal forces and that we will strengthen coordination with the interim governor. It is very important that, given this change of government in Sinaloa, the federal Security Cabinet is present and strengthens coordination activities, always providing assistance and protection to the people of Sinaloa.” This morning, the interim governor met with the Secretary of Security, Omar García Harfuch; the Secretary of Defense, Ricardo Trevilla Trejo; the Secretary of the Navy, Raymundo Morales Ángeles; and the Commander of the National Guard, Guillermo Briseño Lobera, to continue security programs with the federal government.
