Gold One Mine dismisses over 400 workers
The National Union of Mineworkers has embarked on an appeals process for workers dismissed at Gold One mine. This as the mine confirmed the dismissal of 401 members of its staff a number that has since jumped to 405. This follows what the company deems to have been illegal sit-ins by miners at their underground gold mine in Springs last year. Workers downed tools over a labour dispute on organising rights at the mine leading to over 500 workers failing to resurface from an underground shaft. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) claimed it was a hostage situation, while the rival union, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) classified it as a voluntary sit-in.
