The NX500, a successor to Honda's successful adventure motorcycle sold for many years under the name CB500X, comes with a name change and some significant updates. So, how new is the NX500 really, and how competitive is it against its rivals in the 500cc adventure class? At the heart of the Honda NX500 is a 471cc, liquid-cooled, parallel twin-cylinder engine. Producing 47.5 horsepower and 43 Nm of torque, this engine offers balanced, economical, and long-lasting use rather than high performance. Thanks to its low vibration level and smooth power delivery, it's quite successful for city use, daily commutes, and long journeys. Its power level, suitable for A2 licenses, also makes the NX500 accessible to a wide range of users. One of the NX500's strongest points is its ease of use. The 19-inch front wheel provides confidence on rough asphalt and light off-road conditions, while the 17-inch rear wheel maintains agility on asphalt. However, the NX500 isn't a true enduro or off-road bike. It's more of a crossover designed for asphalt, winding roads, long journeys, and, when necessary, paved roads. Honda also worked on weight reduction in the transition from the CB500X to the NX500. Weight was reduced with the new wheel design, while aiming for a more agile character at low speeds and during changes of direction. The HSTC traction control system, a 5-inch color TFT instrument panel, and smartphone connectivity are also among the NX500's modern features. So what are the downsides? The NX500 isn't the most powerful model in its class. The KTM 390 Adventure is more technological and aggressive, the CFMOTO 450MT is more off-road focused, and the Suzuki V-Strom 650 has an advantage in long-distance riding with its larger engine. The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is significantly ahead of the NX500 in terms of true off-road capability. The NX500, among these models, offers a more balanced, accessible, and everyday usable solution. While the suspension system is adequate for daily use and normal touring rides, it can reach its limits during aggressive off-road use or hard riding. Taller riders may complain about wind turbulence caused by the windscreen, while long-distance riders may complain about seat comfort. The lack of cruise control is also a drawback for long-distance riding. Regarding chronic problems, currently there are no widespread and verified serious issues specific to the NX500. While some users mention issues such as pulling to the right, readability of the TFT screen in sunlight, and chain adjustment, these cannot be considered widespread and systematic manufacturing problems. In short, the Honda NX500 is not the most powerful or exciting motorcycle in its class. However, it offers a successful package with its low fuel consumption, reliable engine, ease of use, sufficient performance, long range, and balanced riding characteristics. For those looking for an economical and reliable motorcycle that can be used daily, undertaken for long journeys, and taken off-road when necessary, the NX500 is a very logical option.
