BANAUE to BUSCALAN KALINGA - Foreigners Are Wrong About This Filipino Name

It isn’t “Banaue”… Foreign Nationals who read the name of this town, actually tend to get it wrong. When a lot of tourists hear “Banaue” they probably think of the Batad Rice Terraces. But the municipality itself is a busy and vibrant community with tall houses and rice fields of its own. In fact, I believe the rice terraces at the top of town were once a part of the 20 peso bill. Then there is the name itself… “Banaue”. Through conversations and coffee, I learned it is actually pronounced “Banawor”. The town was named after an ancient bird. But when the area was occupied by foreign nationals… they mispronounced the name. Thus, not many visitors call it as “Banawor”. If you talk to locals from Ifugao who speak “Tuwali” (indigenous language), they will let you know how to properly pronounce this town.
