WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a post on the X platform: "More than 1,300 additional deaths have been recorded since June 21 due to the extreme heat in Europe." He added: "Currently, one million people are living in extreme heat, hundreds have died, schools have closed, and power grids are under severe strain." The French Public Health Agency announced on Sunday that the record-breaking heatwave that swept across the country last week caused nearly 1,000 additional deaths, with France recording its highest temperatures ever. The agency explained that the death toll exceeded 1,200 on Wednesday, which saw the highest temperatures ever recorded, before rising to more than 1,400 daily over the following two days. Before the heatwave, the average daily death toll in France during April and May ranged between 900 and 1,000. The agency indicated that initial estimates show at least 1,000 additional deaths in just three days, suggesting this number could rise as data collection continues. It added that 85% of the deaths were among people aged 65 and over, with the largest increase concentrated in areas under red alert due to extreme heat, which covered about three-quarters of the country. The heatwave continued to break records in Europe over the weekend as it gradually moved eastward. In Germany, the town of Kopschütz in the eastern state of Saxony set a new record for nighttime temperatures, with the temperature not dropping below 29.4 degrees Celsius. This came hours after a temperature of 41.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in Möckner-Drüitz in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, according to preliminary data from the German Meteorological Service.
