《Itto-Ikkei (One Cut, One Scene)》 "Carve it on the spot, leave it on the spot." — A live woodblock-printing series in which artist Bokunen wanders the islands of Okinawa as the mood takes him, then carves, prints, and hand-colors a single print of the scene he meets, entirely on location — and donates the finished work to the very place that inspired it. A once-in-a-lifetime, on-site creation that captures land and scenery you will never encounter the same way twice. Our memorable first stop is Miyagijima. Cross the Kaichu Road (sea-spanning causeway) from Okinawa's main island, pass Henza Island, and you reach this island in Uruma City. Not over-developed for tourism, it's a peaceful island of fields, farmland, and small villages. The old Okinawan scenery woven into everyday island life is rich with character. Bokunen walks the island, searching for the one scene to carve. A blazing sun, gusting sea wind — outdoor printmaking rarely goes as planned. Just what kind of single print will this island bring forth? — The finished work was donated to the community association of Miyagijima, the land that inspired it.
