Wainwright’s Heughscar Hill: Stunning Views & Ancient History from Askham

A Walk Up Heughscar Hill | Wainwright Outlying Fells | Lake District Hike with Sketching & History Join me for a scenic walk from the village of Askham, just south of Penrith, as I explore Heughscar Hill, one of the Wainwright Outlying Fells. This circular route offers a gentle ascent, making it a perfect family-friendly Lake District walk or a short dog walk with stunning views and fascinating history. We follow Wainwright’s route west out of Askham, past woodland and grazing fell ponies, and up to the summit of Heughscar Hill (1,231 ft). Along the way, we stop at the Boundary Stone featured in Wainwright’s guide, take in views of the Helvellyn range, and detour to a secondary cairn for a better viewpoint. The route continues north to an unmarked tarn, then on to the old Roman road known as High Street, leading us to the Cockpit Stone Circle—a Bronze Age relic and one of over 100 archaeological sites on Moor Divock. We also visit a smaller stone circle and the impressive Cop Stone, reflecting on the area's ancient history. As an artist, I take time to capture the landscape with on-location sketching and watercolour painting, especially while the heather is in bloom—a rare chance to add extra colour to one of Lakeland’s less dramatic but beautifully atmospheric fells.
