Short Lake District Walk: Great How from Thirlmere (Better Than You’d Expect)
Great How Walk | Hidden Gem Near Thirlmere | Quiet Alternative to Wainwright Fells Explore Great How, a quiet but rewarding fell walk near Thirlmere, just south of Keswick in the Lake District. Although not a Wainwright, Great How is a fantastic short route that offers impressive views over Thirlmere and across to nearby Wainwright fells like Watson’s Dodd, Clough Head, and High Rigg. Starting from a small lay-by on the old A591, this circular walk takes you through peaceful forestry tracks, scenic woodland, and up to the summit of Great How. With its modest height, it's an ideal walk for families, dog walkers, or anyone with limited time who still wants a great view. 📍 Location: North end of Thirlmere, near the A591 🥾 Walk Features: Easy circular route Great views of Thirlmere and surrounding fells Quiet paths away from the crowds Ideal for a short walk or leg-stretch Optional detours to viewpoints Even though Great How isn’t one of the official Wainwrights, it’s a hidden gem worth exploring if you're in the Thirlmere area or looking for something quieter than the more popular Lakeland peaks. 🎥 Video Breakdown: 0:00 – Intro & why I chose Great How 1:40 – Starting the walk near Thirlmere 4:20 – Climbing through forest trails 6:10 – Detour to a scenic cairn 7:30 – Reaching the summit of Great How 9:15 – Descent with more Thirlmere views 12:00 – Return via woodland paths 👍 Like what you see?
