Francisco Franco was appointed Head of State and Generalissimo after the coup d'état of July 18, 1936, while Spain was embroiled in the Civil War. Franco was not among the candidates for this position; moreover, he was not a member of the initial National Defense Junta. However, the death of General Sanjurjo in a plane crash and a series of other circumstances allowed him to be appointed Head of State. His main rival for power after the Civil War was General Mola, but he too died in another plane crash.
